Use Cases and Deployment Scope
We're using it in multiple roles, Core Datacenter Network Switching; Office Distribution (LAN) Switching and Database Switching. It is managed by 1 Team, but used across the whole org. It solves the problems of solid ROI, scalability & redundancy. Also solved is the top notch support and interoperability with differing vendors.

  • Ease of configuration by intermediate staff.
  • VRRP/Redundancy.
  • Support's depth of knowledge and follow through to resolution.
  • Improved Extreme Management Console UI.
  • More robust CLI auditing/logging.
  • Easier log harvesting for adverse events.
Likelihood to Recommend
Situations that call for a networking switch that doesn't have (or need) all the bells and whistles. Excellent for core networking from layer 3 up. Good for straightforward vlanning, vlan tagging, QoS/CoS, and trunking. VRRP implementation is robust and reliable, although it does not always play nice with open-sourced implementations (like CARP) especially when competing for a shared channel.

Alternatives Considered
Overall the Extreme's CLI is more intuitive that Cisco's. At a core networking perspective the two are probably equal in terms of performance. When we were last upgrading our infrastructure networking Cisco Sales were not as interested in us since we are (by their definition) a 'small shop', whereas Extreme Sales gave us proper treatment and made sure we bought what we needed.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope
The Extreme Ethernet Switches are being leveraged by the entire company. We use them in our core and our edge locations. This setup is advantageous since they leverage the same firmware, you don't need to know different commands to perform the work that you need. The firmware is true to its Linux roots and I love the fact that I can write scripts to be run within the firmware and it is supported.

Likelihood to Recommend
The Extreme Switch lineup is robust and capable. The hardware reliability is really high (with around 50 switches in the environment, I've only had 2 PSU's fail in 3 years and that was due to a lightning strike on the building). The support is capable and skilled and ready to work with you to make sure everything is fixed. We have our switches in the data center as well as remote ATMs in non-HVAC controlled environments and everything works great.

Alternatives Considered
Cisco switches and routers are good, but there is the "Cisco Tax" that you have to pay, along with the use of any non-Cisco branded SFPs blocking any tech support options until the non-Cisco device is removed. Extreme does not play that game. The switches also allow for two true power supplies (hot swappable and easy to swap) instead of the DC backup supply in Cisco. We had a single HPE switch stack in our environment and I found the commands to be clunky but the firmware was quite out of date.

There hasn't been a single problem with the code or hardware that hasn't been resolved in a timely fashion. You get technicians who know the product and who will work with you to get things fixed. That being said, I never ran into a problem with Cisco tech support either. I love that both groups were willing to teach me as they fixed things.

Four years ago, we upgraded our entire network to Extreme switches, Access Points, and controllers. It replaced an older outdated mixed network. We have been very satisfied with the uptime and performance
Pros and Cons
  • Uptime has been fantastic. We have had no issues with our switches shutting down or crashing
  • Policy, We have the ability to enforce Policy at the port
  • Tech Support
  • Their support website is very difficult to navigate.

I think that Extreme would fit in any environment

  • Downtime due to switching has decreased and/or became a non-issue.
Alternatives Considered
Foundry, HP, Cisco, Brocade. Extreme performance is equivalent or better without the price tag added just for their name
